    Hello-Thanks for the blog. I have been using the quick shopping cart for over a year now and my biggest concern and complaint is when I print out the invoice, it has all pricing and billing information....why isn't there a way to print out a invoice without pricing or billing info if the product is a gift?

      Hi Bill -

      We are aware that report speed is an issue for stores with large order volume.  We are definitely looking at ways to speed the reports up.

      In the meantime, here are a couple of workarounds you can try:

      1) For some reports, the lag is due to generating the chart graphics.  However, the "Download report as Microsoft(R) Excel (xls) worksheet" link is put up immediately.  You can use this link to download the data.

      2) Click on the word Reports in the menu instead of going to a report menu selection.  Then enter a start date and an end date for a short time period, such as a week.

      Hope this helps,

      I have a continuous with slowness/timing out with QSC. It takes so long for a specific request to load, for example, categories, that by the time I add a product, update pricing or add attributes the qsc has timed out again and I need to start from the beginning signing in and going through the whole process again. Some products, since there isn't an automatic function, must have the different sizes/prices/price differences calculated or there are so many options that it takes a while to get them all in there. When it times out, which is EVERY TIME I try to use it, I lose all the work I had just done. It also doesn't go back to the previous section I had selected, for example, categories: christmas items. It goes all the way back to the first page, which means I have to take time to make my way through the line up, and by the time I actually begin working on my product line up, it times out again. This happens whether I'm suing IE or Mozilla, and it has happened continually over the last several months with no improvement. It happens whether I use my own computer or another one. Can this be fixed or is it part of the general frustration level that I must accept? Thanks.

        Hi Margaret,

        I agree the timeout issue can be aggravating, especially if you have a lot of information to add to your product detail.  We are experimenting with adding a popup that lets you extend your session if it is about to timeout when you are in the middle of adding information.  In the meantime, a workaround is to have as much as possible of the information "ready" before you actually add/edit the product.  Some merchants make a worksheet for themselves and type in the product name and description ahead of time, then copy-paste this into the text fields.  You can also have the pricing, options, and so on ready ahead of time so you can just add it without having to stop and calculate.

        I am aware that the navigation within the product catalog could be improved so you are not always taken back to the first page.  We will work on this with our Usability team.

    I have a very small business and have been using your Quick Shopping Cart for some time. It is a wonderful, easy to use, self-contained stand-alone product. It is a great introduction into the world of e-commerce.

    For me, the Quick Shopping cart product pages (templates) were a little too restrictive and I created the 'product' pages in my web site. How can I directly link to the shopping cart's ‘view page’ to manage the customers order. The Home, contact us, about us, and thank you pages would also be with my web site.

    In addition, why does traffic fact not work with the shopping cart. I really need to know what my customers are doing in the shopping cart.

      Hi John -

      You've hit the nail on the head when you say Quick Shopping Cart is a self-contained, stand-alone product.  I think that is part of the appeal of Quick Shopping Cart for entry-level online merchants.

      We are just starting to conceptualize how we might allow more advanced merchants to customize their store navigation and their look and feel.  These plans are in the works and I think there will be some exciting changes.

      As far as linking from your web site product pages to Quick Shopping Cart, have you looked at the "Links" feature under the Site Promotion menu?

      You would still create product pages in Quick Shopping Cart.  Then, you would generate a link directly to that product page by selecting "ShowCase Product" and selecting the product from the drop-down. The page will display a link that you can use in your web site to direct your customers to the page in Quick Shopping Cart where they will add the product to the cart.

      Regarding Traffic Facts, we are looking at integrating this with Quick Shopping Cart.

        Stand alone is one thing, but I am unable to provide support information or product specific flexibility as clients need. For example, I have no way to provide them a document showing stain/finish choices. These are product and craftsman specific and if I could have pop-up with images customers could then see what their options actually are by product. Confusion reigns supreme otherwise. Another BIG issue for me is the handling fee. You require a set handling fee, but if I put the handling fee required by a jewelry armoire (3%) it ALSO APPLIES IT TO A CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT and brings the price WAY OUT OF LINE.

        This absolutely MUST be product specific or I will lose sales and anger customers, or else I will lose a great deal of money and not be competitive.

          Hi Margaret,

          From looking at your site (great site by the way!), I can see how showing furniture finishes would be helpful.  Thanks for sugggesting this.

          Some of our Quick Shopping Cart merchants have come up with innovative workarounds to accomplish similar effects.  The first method is the simplest, although it does require use of image editing software to edit and create images.  The second method requires some HTML expertise.

          The first method is to use image-editing software to add the words "Click to see finishes" to the standard-size product image that displays on the product detail page.  Then, using your image editor, create a ZOOM-size product image that shows the finishes.  When these are uploaded and published, your customer can click on the product photo on the product detail page to see a popup with your finishes.

          The second method is to have a page or a PDF document somewhere on your hosted site, and include a link in the Product Description to this page or document.

          Requests for product-specific handling fees is not something I have heard before, so thank you very much for suggesting this.  We will look at this when we plan for additional shipping enhancements.

    My biggest complaint about QSC is downloading pictures. It is incredibly slow during the day and I am unable to update my website, most of the time the page times out without downloading the pictures. This is very frustrating when I'm trying to add 80+ products for the upcoming holiday season. I've called many times on this issue and am told they are working on it - is this true? Is there anything I can do to download my pictures in a timely fashion? Thanks - Leah

      Leah, I'm sorry you are experiencing this.  What browser are you using?  A customer posted on this blog that Firefox from Mozilla performs much faster than Internet Explorer.  It may be worth a try if you are using IE.

      Thanks for writing, and let me know how it goes,

    I am disappointed that I can't search for and find a customer in the member directory and then click on something to get their order history. That seems like a very basic online store function.

      Hi Jeff -

      Now that you bring this to my attention, it does seem a bit of an oversight.  Tell me - what is it about the Member search that you like better than searching Orders on customer email address or name?  More search fields?

    Could someone please tell me why my shopping cart page width is so narrow?
    Just trying to establish a basic product
    page layout & I see my layout is only using ~75% of page viewing width? How can I correct this? I believe my HTML is ok, is this a shopping cart quirk?
    Thanks for your assistance.

      Hi Bob,

      The shopping cart templates restrict the screen size to a width of 800 pixels.  This is an industry standard that allows people with lower-resolution monitors to be able to shop your site easily.  On a lower-resolution monitor, the store will take up the entire width of the screen.  Limiting the width to 800 pixels allows us to account for all users.

      One feature that we are currently working on is store templates that are flexible, so that they fit within 800 pixels for the lower-resolution monitors, but expand to be wider on higher-resolution monitors.

    Two Things...First is there a way for a client to "bookmark" my site via a link (ADD ME TO YOUR FAVORITES) to their favorites to be spelled out on my website's front page? That would save on google fees, etc and make it easier for the customer. Second, my logo in the upper left corner of my homepage is now alot smaller than before and the tech help said that is normal. The logo used to be a normal size and no matter which logo I load it is small and hard to read.. I look forward to the replies. Thanks

      Hi Ryan,

      For the bookmark, try adding this script to your Welcome message:

      <span style="cursor:pointer;text-decoration:underline;" onclick='if(window.external){window.external.AddFavorite("http://www.godaddy.com","Go Daddy");} else if(window.sidebar){window.sidebar.addPanel("Go Daddy", "http://www.godaddy.com", "");} return false;'>
      Click here to add this page to your favorites</span>

      Obviously, you will need to replace "http://www.godaddy.com" with your URL, and "Go Daddy" with your site name.  You can also edit "Click here to add this page to your favorites" to say whatever you want.

      Warning:  Be real careful that you leave the quotes, pernteses, brackets and other symbols exactly as-is, or you will break the script.

      For the logo, here is a tip.  You can control the size of your logo if you make it the size you want in image editing software, then save the file as GIF and upload the GIF.  Quick Shopping Cart will resize a JPG image but will not resize a GIF image.

    Do you notify your customers before you make changes to the shopping cart?
    We can log on and find that changes have been made but we were never notified of them before it happened. Is this just something you do and your customers find out when they sign on?
    Have we been over looked on the email notifications?

    Thanks,

      Hi Karen,

      Our policy has been not to send emails on product updates so as to avoid pestering our customers with too many emails in your inbox.

      Whenever we release major new functionality, we include a brief description in the What's New section of the Home page, usually with a link to further information.  We also publish release notes that you can look at.  We link to these release notes in the first sentence of the What's New section ("Take a look at new functionality...").

    We are not expert developers and sometimes it takes us a few minutes to find the HTML code that we wanbt to add to do simple things like change the font colors, link to other websited or pages for product descriptions, etc. Many times we enter the new code and publish only to find that our session has timed out. Then we have to start over again and waste another few minutes. Is there any way to extend the session time out limits?

      Hi John,

      There are a couple things in the works that I hope will alleviate this somewhat.  First, we are working on providing a WYSIWYG editor in the HTML fields, so you won't have to actually create the HTML tags yourself.  Second, we are looking at a timeout warning that you can click to extend your session.

    The template that I am using has a blue background. I changed the font color to white#FFFFFF and that makes the text easier to read. But, I included a link to another website and I cannot change the default link color from blue to white or red. How can I resolve this?

      John,

      Quick Shopping Cart uses CSS to determine link "styles", or colors.  The CSS for the Home Page is setting the link color, and this is not something you can edit.

      However, you can set a special style in the Welcome Message that will override the style for the Home Page.

      If you add the following snippet to your Welcome Message, it will display a link to www.godaddy.com, in white.  Obviously you will need to change www.godaddy.com in both places to whatever you are linking to.

      <style>
       a.cust_welcome:link
       {
           color: white;
           text-decoration: underline;
        }
        a.cust_welcome:hover
       {
           color: white;
        }

      </style>

      <a class="cust_welcome" href="http://www.godaddy.com"> www.godaddy.com </a>
